Petition to UCL Provost

UCL staff and students: please sign this petition to the UCL Provost

Dear Provost

We the undersigned are staff and students of UCL. We are writing to ask you to use your position to make a clear public statement that UCL supports a rapid resolution to the current disputes in the HE sector.

We do not believe that UCU’s demands are unreasonable – on the contrary, addressing the chronic levels of casualisation and excessive workload at UCL and the gender and race pay gap currently in excess of 16% and 13.4% – on your figures – should be a top priority for UCL management anyway.

Before 2010 your predecessor, Malcolm Grant, lobbied for high tuition fees against the wishes of Academic Board. Yet you have taken no positive action while staff pay has been eroded by 20% (excluding London inflation). We think their demands are necessary, not just reasonable.

We also think that since you oppose “de-risking” the USS pension scheme, UCL now needs to take leadership and use its influence to make a public statement to help ensure that USS accepts that position.

We urge you to publicly support the demands of your staff union*, and use your position to provide leadership of UCEA and Universities UK to secure a lasting settlement on the UCU’s reasonable terms.
