Join the Executive Committee

The branch Executive Committee is elected annually at the AGM. Any member is welcome to stand for any of the positions.


Positions Available

Up to 15 ordinary member positions are available, along with the following Branch Officer posts.

President

The president will chair all general meetings and all committee meetings of the Branch and perform such other duties as are laid upon the president by any rule or are decided by the committee.  In the absence of the president these duties will be performed by the vice-chair/vice-president, failing which another officer as the committee decides. In accordance with normal practice, the president may, between meetings of the committee, take any action on behalf of the committee which is both urgent and necessary. Such Chair’s Action must be reported for approval to the next committee meeting.

Treasurer

The treasurer will have custody of the funds of the Branch and authority to make payments from them in accordance with the rules as the need arises.  The treasurer’s duties will be to keep the books of the Branch; to present the accounts of the Branch for auditing as necessary; to present these audited accounts to a general meeting of the Branch, to publish them to all members of the Branch, and to submit a copy forthwith to the honorary treasurer of UCU. In the absence of the treasurer, the treasurer’s duties will be performed by another officer as the committee decides.  

Casework Secretary

The Casework secretary shall be responsible for organising case work for the branch, liaising with the branch administrator and other officers to triage and allocate caseworkers to members in need of assistance. They shall also keep a record of our case work and report to the Committee on its general progress.

Equality officer

The equality officer will:

  • have knowledge of and commitment to relevant issues, and be willing to undertake training according to the needs of UCU, monitor the implementation of equality policies within the institution, and, where appropriate, encourage and support local negotiations on equality matters
  • monitor the volume and nature of personal casework which involves equality issues to ensure that the Branch has appropriate mechanisms in place for handling such cases
  • where appropriate, provide information, encouragement and support to members about equality issues
  • ensure that UCU’s national annual meetings, and any other relevant events and opportunities for women, black members, migrant members, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members and disabled members are publicised locally, that members from all groups are encouraged to participate, and that the Branch maximises the opportunities for recruitment and organisation amongst all groups
  • where appropriate, provide liaison between the Branch and UCU’s equality structures
Pensions officer

The duties of the Pensions officer include keeping up to date on USS developments and on UCU’s national negotiations (and other workplace pension schemes joined by our members). They will report to the committee and the branch on such developments, and assist members in understanding the USS or other relevant workplace schemes and their condition. Where possible they will attend national briefings on pensions.

Secretary

The duties of the secretary are to call general and committee meetings of the Branch; to ensure that minutes of those meetings are kept; to organise membership circulations as the committee deems necessary; to arrange notification of local election and ballot results to all members; and to perform such other duties as are laid on the secretary by any rule or are decided by the committee.  In the absence of the secretary, the secretary’s duties will be performed by another officer as the committee decides.

Membership/Recruitment Secretary

The membership/recruitment secretary will be responsible for recruitment and for keeping any membership records that are necessary at local level. The membership secretary will provide membership information promptly to UCU in accordance with instructions from UCU Head Office or Regional Office to enable statutory and rule requirements of membership records to be met.  In the absence of the membership secretary, these duties will be performed by another officer as the committee decides.

Communications Officer

The Communications officer shall be responsible for general matters of communications from the branch, organising and managing our social media team, and working with the branch admin and the Committee on communications such as the branch web-site and all-member messages. They will report to the Committee and periodically report on the branch communications strategy.

Anti-Casualisation Officer

The role of anti-casualisation officer will be filled by a member whose main employment is casualised, or who has, in the two years prior to their nomination, been in casualised employment as their main employment.

Health and safety officer

The duties of the Health and Safety officer include attending Health and Safety Committee meetings and negotiating with UCL management on health and safety standards at UCL, working with and organising Health and Safety reps, periodically reporting to the EC on health and safety issues, and any other periodic duties as the Committee decides.

Environment officer

The duties of the Environmental Officer include organising the work of the branch on environmental questions, sustainability, climate action, and related campus campaigns. They will periodically report to the Committee on the environmental work of the branch. 

Post-Graduate Officer

The duties of the post-graduate officer include organising among post-graduate members, initiating actions to help recruit post-graduate members, feeding-back information to the EC on post-graduate issues at UCL, and communicating with post-graduate members.

Nomination Process

There is a simple nomination form for each nominee to complete: nomination form. You simply need to complete your details and tick which position you are interested in. Two other UCU members must agree to back your nomination, and confirm this to the Returning Officer.

The nomination deadline for 2025/26 is 28 days before the AGM, which is Thursday 29th May 2025, by close of business (17:00).

Contested Officer Positions

If any of the officer positions are contested an electronic ballot will be held, according to the Branch Rule 10. Ordinary EC members (non-officers) will be elected by a show of hands at the meeting.

Time Off for Trade Union Duties

Under the Trade Union Recognition Agreement, time off from work is available for Trade Union duties and training. Executive Committee members can claim backfill Facility Time. Allocated FTEs will be reimbursed to your department budget and your workload should be reduced accordingly.

Training

UCU runs activist training for the London Region. Executive Committee members would be expected to undertake the Rep 1 training course as a minimum. Other courses are available to attend, and paid time off for training is available. See the London Region and South East training page.

Eligibility

Any standard UCU member is eligible to stand for any position with the exception of the Post-Graduate Officer who will be enrolled on a Post-Graduate programme at UCL. UCL UCU aims to have represented on the branch committee:
    1. At least one member drawn from each School (SLASH, SLMS, BEAMS) and professional services.
    2. At least two members of IOE staff.
    3. At least one representative of each staff group (academic, teaching fellow, research staff, professional services, postgraduate).
    4. A wide representation across equality strands is strongly encouraged, and if possible the ‘equality officer’ position should be expanded into an equality subgroup.
