UCL UCU statement on women’s rights in Afghanistan

UCL UCU condemns the “Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice” law issued by the Taliban authorities in Afghanistan on 21 August 2024. The law contains discriminatory dress codes, restrictions on movement, and prohibitions on women speaking in public, which flout international law and further dehumanise half the population of Afghanistan. This law comes on top of misogynistic laws that have barred women and girls from formal education for the past three years. This discrimination against women, and the increased violence and harassment they face, are unacceptable, and we urge the Taliban authorities to immediately repeal this law. We stand in solidarity with the women of Afghanistan and will continue to advocate for their rights and freedoms.
