FAO: All Associate Lecturer/Lecturer (Teaching) staff Open Meeting to discuss compliance with the Teaching Concordat

When the Teaching Concordat was introduced in 2020, it represented a step forward for the recognition of teaching staff and a commitment by UCL to value and treat us fairly. Over the past few years, however, we have been made aware of many breaches of the Concordat, particularly affecting fixed-term staff and/or lecturers (teaching).

We are writing to invite you to a meeting to discuss concerns or breaches and to begin to get a more detailed picture of how UCL is failing to honour its commitments, specifically with regard to the Concordat, but also in policies around redundancy and redeployment (where we are also aware of frequent, regular breaches). If you are concerned about any of the following (or other relevant issues), please come along:

  • Being on the right contract;
  • Being kept on rolling temporary contracts;
  • Being kept in dialogue about permanent opportunities;
  • Being on the correct grade.

We hope this meeting will provide staff, especially at grades 7 and 8, with relevant information about the obligations UCL has agreed to under the Concordat and other relevant policies, as well as to find out what is going on in different faculties and departments.

In particular, we are concerned about frequent reports of:

  • Staff being retained for many years on successive fixed-term contracts;
  • Staff not being mentored into applications or redeployment to forthcoming permanent positions;
  • Fixed-term staff being forced to competitively reapply for work they are already doing rather than being consulted about ongoing work opportunities;
  • Staff not being correctly graded for the work they carry out;
  • ‘Teaching’ staff not being granted parity of esteem with ‘academic’ staff;
  • Covert or overt exclusion or prejudice around ‘teaching’ staff.
