General Meeting to decide motions for UCU Congress, Wednesday 12th March 1-2:30, online

This is a formal calling notice for a General Meeting of UCL UCU, and we cordially invite the submission of motions to that meeting, which will take place on: 

Wednesday 12th March from 1-2:30 online on Zoom. Members should register in advance using zoom link they received via email.

This meeting has been called to debate motions that members wish to be submitted to UCU Congress and HE Sector Conference in the name of the branch. Please note the longer meeting time of 90 minutes. This is to enable debate and voting on as many submitted motions as possible.

Congress is UCU’s supreme policy-making body, where motions are debated and, if passed, become national UCU policy. Congress includes separate further and higher education sector conferences, where policy particular to these areas is decided. 

The branch is entitled to submit one (1) motion to Congress and two (2) motions to HE Sector Conference. The meeting can decide (a) whether to support a motion, and, if more than the total number of motions is supported, (b) which motion(s) to submit.

Timetable:

• Motions to be submitted to ucu@ucl.ac.uk by 12pm on Friday 7th March
• Motions will be circulated to members in the afternoon of Friday 7th March, with a call for any amendments and late motions*.
• Amendments to motions must be submitted by 12pm on Monday 10th March
• Everything will be circulated in the afternoon on Monday 10th March.
• The General Meeting will be held on Wednesday 12th March, 1-2:30 online

*Note: Late motions are motions that could genuinely not be submitted before the deadline, e.g. because they concern events that transpired after that deadline.

Format:

Motions to Congress and Sector Conference have a word limit of 150 words, including headings, such as “Congress believes”. Note that only the “resolves” part can commit UCU to taking action.

As a general rule, if a motion concerns HE-specific matters, ranging from academic freedom to industrial strategy, it will be appropriate for Sector Conference. If it concerns broader matters of policy, or spans HE and FE sectors, it will be appropriate for Congress.
